Dear patients: It has come to our attention that accusations have been made regarding Dr Gibbs’ rooms withholding files and we would like to take this opportunity to assure you this is not the case.

Please remember the practice has only been closed a week and there is a massive amount of administration and organisation involved. We have approximately 5000 files to sort and distribute so if there are any delays, it is simply because of these facts.

For the month of January 2019 staff will be at the practice between eight and ten in the morning, Monday to Thursday, if patients would like to obtain their files personally. We ask however that you give us a week to get it ready for you. The same applies in the case of handing over files to other doctors. We have found in some cases doctors don’t want files due to space requirements and prefer to start from scratch. Doctors are able to obtain blood results from the labs and do not need files to do so.

Most doctors are able to treat patients in urgent cases without their files, since patients with serious conditions are generally well-informed about such conditions. That said, patients are entitled to their files and we are trying to make them available as quickly as possible and will keep you updated as to the process. We sincerely appreciate your understanding during this time and ask that our staff be treated courteously.

There have been a few shocking incidents of verbal abuse and some staff members have felt personally threatened by these behaviours. Let us retain some sense of decorum and dignity. Thank you to those patients and colleagues who have made an effort to show support and to facilitate this process. We can not thank you enough for your loyalty and for the opportunity to serve in your community these past two years.

Please contact us on 0393220820, 0607890920 or enquiries.gibbs@gmail.com for any queries.

We regret to inform all our patients that Dr Gibbs is moving to Gauteng to complete his specialisation in Anaesthesiology from January 2019. Dr Gibbs will permanently close down on the 31st December 2018, but he will effectively stop consulting from the Saturday the 22nd December 2018.

CLOSURE OF DR GIBBS' ROOMS

We regret to inform all our patients that Dr Gibbs is moving to Gauteng to complete his specialisation in Anaesthesiology from January 2019. His practice will permanently close down on the 31st December 2018, but Dr Gibbs will effectively stop consulting from the Saturday the 22nd December 2018.

Please note that Grace Pharmacy and Lancet Labs are not affected

We would have liked to have informed all our patients much earlier and it is most unfortunate that many patients have heard rumors of leaving prior to our official notice. There have been numerous factors that have influenced this, mainly:

  • We have been negotiating with a GP from outside the area to take over our practice. These negotiations unfortunately collapsed late last week. This process has taken far too long and has most certainly placed us in a very complicated position.
  • The sale of our medical practice has also been adversely influenced.

The implications for all of us are large, and effectively our patients will need to find a new GP on the South Coast from January 2019. The landlord is likely still going to try and occupy the building with a doctor in the new year. As it stands, Dr Gibb’s practice is closing down.

Dr Gibbs has a significant responsibility for all the patient files. Currently all medical records are digital, but we still have all the old physical files. The practice is only allowed to distribute doctors’ notes to a nominated doctor. The physical file and the digital file will be distributed to your nominated doctor on request. Please be calm, patient and respectful to the process.

All patients have 6 months to complete this process after which the files will be stored and the cost of retrieving the file on request will be on the patient. Please try and complete this process during the next 2 weeks of December while we are still in the rooms. From January 2019 communication will only be through the practice email … enquiries.gibbs@gmail.com …. For patients to request files to be sent to a nominated doctor. One of our staff members may still be available to distribute the physical files over the next 6 months (this is still to be confirmed).

We would like to thank you all for your support of the last 2 years. Circumstances have pushed us to leave to specialise and this is effectively the end of an era. We apologise for the inconvenience but we have tried our best to obtain a doctor for the practice. We wish you all good health and all the best in the future. The practice remains open until the 31st December, but we will no longer consult from the 22nd December.

Best Regards

Dr Mark Gibbs
